Food
Grow2Zero FARMS is distributing boxes of fresh produce intended for local West Long Beach residents every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. until the end of March at 2851 Santa Fe Ave. Recipients must provide their ZIP code and the number of people who reside in the household when they receive food. The farm welcomes walk-ups only on a first-come, first-serve basis. The boxes will be distributed at the back gate off Columbia Street.
Christian Outreach in Action provides meals to go every day of the week (check their website for the times). They also provide a human and pet food bank every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon at 515 E. Third St. They also provide a free clothing distribution on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and a free diapers on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon (some documentation required). Food Finders connects donated perishable food to nonprofit pantries and shelters. Their food pantry locator can be found here or they can be reached at 562-283-1400.
Long Beach Community Table is providing food for individuals and families impacted by COVID-19 four days per week at their warehouse in Bellflower. If you’re homebound, you can apply for home deliveries by filling out this food request application to see if you qualify.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 525 East Seventh St. provides meals on the fourth Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Help Me Help You distributes food through several food pantries at different times of the month, including at Revive Church, Philadelphian SDA Church, the Museum of Latin American Art, Oropeza Elementary School, Stevenson Elementary School and Cesar Chavez Elementary School. Urban Community Outreach at 241 Cedar Ave. has a food pantry on Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. They will also be offering meals to go. They can be reached at 562-582-1000.
Light and Life Christian Fellowship at 5951 Downey Ave. offers a food pantry on Mondays from noon to 2 p.m. Fill out this form by the Thursday before.
Salvation Army provides food boxes for seniors, families and individuals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed for lunch) at their location at 3092 Long Beach Boulevard. Some documentation and proof-of-need required. Go to their website for details.
Temple Baptist Church at 2825 East 10th Street distributes free bags of food Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. Each household gets three bags, which can include cans and nonperishables and when available, some frozen meat, fresh vegetables and bread. Call 562-434-3217 with any questions.
Ricardo’s Nursery, along with Puente Latino and the LA Food Bank, has a food drive every other Saturday. The next one is Dec. 19 at 8 a.m. Wear a face mask and bring a grocery bag. They recommend you get there before 7 a.m. to get in line and wear a jacket because it’s cold in the mornings. For more information, call Ricardo’s Nursery at 562-428-7252.
Strength.Church at 4645 Woodruff Ave. in Lakewood is providing grocery assistance. Call 562-758-0060 to get on their list and make an appointment.
Homeless services
The Multi-Service Center provides outreach services, intake and assessment services, case management, as well as referrals to shelters and other social service programs to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The city has a new, year-round homeless shelter, which can be accessed by going through the Multi-Service Center. They can be reached at 562-570-4500.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 525 East Seventh St. offers a hot shower, clean clothing and a meal to those experiencing homelessness on four Saturdays each month from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Long Beach Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter for men at 1430 Pacific Ave. They can intake new residents on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or call them at 562-591-1292 at any time of day. They do not offer walk-in or emergency shelter for women, children or families and ask that families visit the city’s Multi-Service Center for a referral.
Domestic violence services
Women’s Shelter of Long Beach provides free and confidential support for domestic violence victims, which can include emergency supportive housing. Their 24/7 hotline is 562-437-4663. The Domestic Violence Resource Center is available at 562-437-7233 for counseling, referrals, and help to leave an abusive relationship, or help if a victim has already escaped.
Su Casa provides emergency and transitional shelter and help for those fleeing abusive relationships. Their 24-hour crisis hotline is staffed and available at 562-402-4888, and their walk-in center at 3750 East Anaheim St., Suite #100 is open during business hours.
Interval House provides a full range of domestic violence shelter and supportive services in over 70 languages. Their 24-hour crisis hotline number is 562-594-4555.
Job and business resources
Pacific Gateway still has their WorkPlace doors open (by appointment and with social distancing protocols in place) and can help Long Beachers find jobs. Call first at 562-570-3700. They also maintain a landing page of businesses that are hiring.
The city’s Economic Development Department has a business hotline to help businesses impacted by COVID-19. Call them at 562-570-4249.
Senior services
Older Adult Resource Line is operated by the city’s health department on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They can point seniors in the right direction for food delivery, home supplies, prescription delivery services, utility restoration and mental health resources. Call 562-570-4636 and select option 5.
Meals on Wheels is providing hot dinners and cold lunches for seniors. Call 562-439-5000 and select option 0 or visit their website. It costs $8.25 per day for two meals each day, but financial assistance is available for those who show they are in need.
Salvation Army delivers food boxes to seniors with some restrictions. Call them at 562-247-3528.
Heart of Ida is matching trained and caring volunteers with older adults who may feel socially isolated. Call 562-570-3548.
The LGBTQ Center Long Beach has a “Buddy to Buddy” call program for isolated seniors as well as “Grocery and Essential Items” delivery program. Call the Senior Services coordinator at 562-354-4817.
WISE & Healthy Aging‘s Holistic Elder Abuse Response Team program offers counseling, legal advocacy and information to disabled dependent adults and older adults experiencing abuse. For more information call 310-394-9871 ext. 423.
Services for the immigrant community
The Filipino Migrant Center is providing assistance to Filipino families and undocumented non-Filipino families impacted by COVID-19. Call them at 818-519-2251.
Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition is a regional hub for information, services, and resources for the immigrant community.
The Maye Center is providing relief to Cambodian survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide. Call them at 562-704-6788 for more information.
Centro CHA is offering citizenship and integration services as well as workforce development programs in Spanish and English for Long Beach families. Call them at 562-612-4180.
Medical Services
TCC Family Health, formerly known as The Children’s Clinic, provides health care services to those of all ages (children, teens, adults and seniors) with MediCal, the uninsured and those underserved, regardless of their ability to pay or immigration status. Call their appointment line at 844-822-4646.
The city has a no-cost Rapid Assessment Clinic at Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus, 1305 E. Pacific Coast Highway. The walk-in clinic is available to those who are unable to access their own doctors. Visitors can be assessed and treated for common conditions, like earaches and urinary tract infections, or obtain and renew prescriptions for common medications.
ENDOVERDOSE is a 501c3 nonprofit for certified Naloxone training, fentanyl test strips, and in person professional trainings.
Mental health services
LA County residents can get free access to the meditation and mindfulness app called Headspace until the end of the year. Sign up here.
The LA County Department of Mental Health has a 24/7 hotline that gives people access to mental health services in LA County. Over the phone, they can help with screening, assessment, referral and crisis counseling. Their hotline is 1-800-854-7771.
Jewish Family and Children’s Services of Long Beach provides remote counseling and support group services on a sliding cost scale. Leave a message at 562-427-7916 or go to their website. You do not have to be Jewish to access their services.
National Alliance on Mental Illness has a hotline that provides free peer-support services. They can share resource referrals to help people living with mental health conditions and their family members. Call their hotline at 800-950-NAMI or in a crisis, text “NAMI” to 741741
Crisis Text line provides free 24/7 support via text. Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a counselor.
The Behavioral Health Urgent Care Clinic at 3210 Long Beach Boulevard has a crisis walk-in center where clients can be evaluated and given medications on a short-term basis and be connected with ongoing help.
